The winners of the fifth annual Economic Fuel Student Business Plan Challenge were announced recently, with eight winning teams taking home a chunk of the $117,000 in seed capital donated each year by local business owners and philanthropists Rob and Cherie Arkley.
The Arkleys started the student business competition in 2006 as a way to promote entrepreneurship in Humboldt County, and help recent college graduates apply their education and talents toward new business ventures. Since then, $585,000 has been awarded and many new businesses have become successful local fixtures as a result, according to a press release.
This year, 32 teams vied for a place among the eight finalist positions.
Judges Jennifer Budwig of Redwood Capital Bank, Bob and Sue Crane of C Crane Co., Bruce Hamilton of Wildwood Manufacturing, Judy Harrison of Growing Your Business, Gabrielle Parkinson of Career Life Transitions Institute and Cedar Reuben of Humboldt Investment Capital, LLC decided on the winning teams, and the $117,000 seed capital was distributed as follows:
The $25,000 awards went to: Eden Home, a care facility offering a dignified and respectful residence for six full-time residents; Humboldt Home Health Services, created to serve the medical needs of Humboldt County by providing in-home occupational, speech and physical therapy, nursing care and psycho/social services to patients who are home-bound; Luscious Gardens, an edible landscaping company and nursery dedicated

to greater food sustainability, that offers edible landscaping from the more than 80 varieties of edible perennials propagated at its nursery; and Sherlock Records Management, a full-service records management facility offering physical and electronic document management solutions designed to increase businesses office efficiencies and decrease costs.
The $10,000 award went to Entrance Art, which provides custom-made entryways manufactured with the finest hardwoods and specialized glass artwork for both residential and commercial establishments throughout California and southern Oregon.
The $5,000 prize went to Rad Power Bikes which manufactures and distributes custom electric bicycles as well as retailing electric bike conversion kits and components aimed at providing a viable personal transportation solution that is clean, quiet and economical.
The $1,000 awards went to Shred Tec, a secure document destruction company that will pick up, shred beyond legibility and recycle documents on a will call and scheduled basis. This company also prioritizes providing employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities and Vance Banjos, which offers custom high-end banjos along with repair and restoration work for acoustic instruments. Product forms include a wide variety of banjos; five-string openback, banjo ukulele and tenor banjo models.
Grand prize winner and owner of Sherlock Records Management, Corey Fitze, 19, was a previous winner of the Young Entrepreneurs Business Challenge — the high school version of the competition sponsored by the Humboldt County Office of Education.
”Economic Fuel meant more to me than just capital for my business. To me it was an opportunity to share my business plan with local business leaders,” Fitze said in a release. “I am very passionate about my business and obviously I am confident in its success. The real test, though, is if these local business leaders feel my business will be a success in the county. It was extremely rewarding to me to hear their confidence in my business, and the $25,000 capital was icing on the cake.”

LinkedIn Members #1 Most Frequently Asked Question

One of the most frequently asked questions we get about LinkedIn from over 10,000 submitted questions through our webinars, in posts, or directly by email is:

How do I maximize my use of LinkedIn?

In many ways this question resonates throughout the social platforms, but for today, let’s focus on LinkedIn.

To answer the question “How do I make the most of LinkedIn?” I would like to share with you a new way to look at LinkedIn. I propose that you should look at this platform as a small version of the internet. Meaning LinkedIn is its own world. Your webpage is your profile, the leading companies are the groups, the people are in the answers and questions sections as well as in the groups and so on.

To master this new world, you have to understand it’s 60 million members behaviors, attitudes, rules, language and etiquette. You also have to master your own voice, message, ability to communicate, processes, and rules. The following list will give you the outline needed to truly start building your LinkedIn presence the right way.

The 7 Stages of LinkedIn/Social Media Mastery
1. Assess your Assets and Capabilities – Opportunity
2. Identify your Social Media Strategy – Clarity
3. Lay your Social Web – The Foundation
4. Optimize your Presence – Get Found
5. Build Your Communities – Become a Leader
6. Develop a Marketing Funnel – Lead People
7. Integrate Business Process Outsourcing – Don’t do it Alone

Applying these Stages will certainly ensure you are moving in the right direction on LinkedIn and that you are creating proof along the way.

Archive Systems Enhances Records Management Services with Virtual Records Center, Release 5.0

[May 18, 2010]

May 18, 2010 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) — Archive Systems, Inc., a leading provider of document management services, today announced ASPEN Virtual Records Center (http://www.archivesystems.com/recordsmanagement/virtualrecordscenter.asp) (VRC) Release 5.0, a comprehensive, Web-based extension to paper-based records management. The new release enhances Archive Systems’ records management services (http://www.archivesystems.com/recordsmanagement/) by enabling users to perform Advanced Searches on inventory, specify delivery dates, receive notifications of Virtual File Delivery, and more.
Story continues below ↓

With the VRC, users can immediately locate their containers, indexed file folders, or media utilizing a variety of search methods. The new Advanced Search feature allows users to perform queries for unrelated items in a single search, streamlining the user experience. This enhancement greatly improves the efficiency for identifying and ordering required individual files, entire boxes or computer media.

“We are very excited about the latest VRC release because it continues to improve our clients’ ability to effectively manage their business records. We ensure that they have the business-critical information they need, making it available on their desktop 24/7. In addition, we speed the ability to view their documents in storage through Virtual File Delivery,” said BJ Johnson, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Operations of Archive Systems.

Additional enhancements integrated into the VRC offer greater flexibility for the user. For example, users can now specify timeframes for both Virtual File Delivery and files delivered by Archive Systems’ drivers. Customized drop down menus and email notifications also provide for a richer, more user-friendly experience.

“Archive Systems helps companies make the transition to the paperless environment at their own pace. The VRC begins that process by giving clients the ability to view their paper documents on the desktop through Virtual File Delivery. When they’re ready, we then move them to ASPEN Virtual File Room (http://www.archivesystems.com/aspen360/VFRedition.asp) to remove the paper from whole departments,” Johnson added.

About Archive Systems, Inc.

Archive Systems delivers products and services that enable organizations to manage paper and digital documents. The company provides a bridge to a paperless future by uniting traditional records management services with cloud-based Virtual File Room technology.

Archive Systems’ flagship document management platform, ASPEN, automates and optimizes complex document-based processes, and manages the flow of work throughout an organization.

ASPEN Accounts Payable combines AP best practices with ZeroTouch AP imaging and workflow. Additional ASPEN Virtual File Room applications support document centric areas such as human resources, vendor management, and contract and lease management. These technologies, combined with Archive Systems’ document services, capture, store, route, and archive documents online — improving efficiency and accuracy while lowering costs.
