A missing box of Cuyahoga County records containing personal information for 300 people has been returned, untampered with, county officials said Tuesday.

The box fell off a truck Aug. 24 on the way to a storage facility. Encrypted tapes in the box held information, including Social Security numbers, for private vendors who provide services to the county. The tapes did not contain personal information about county employees.

The box was hit by another truck and was knocked down the street, county Administrator Jim McCafferty said. That same day, an employee from a company that does business with the county’s storage vendor, Iron Mountain, picked up the box for safekeeping.

The company, which McCafferty declined to identify, planned to return it to Iron Mountain. But when employees read a Plain Dealer story Saturday, they learned the county was looking for the box. On Monday, company employees returned it.

County officials on Tuesday opened the box and verified everything was there.
